How USTA League Registration Works
Each season, Balboa coordinates team registration with USTA on behalf of our members. Here’s what that process looks like and when to expect to hear from us.
Early planning
Balboa determines how many teams we can field
- Before outreach begins, we assess facility availability and confirm blackout dates for the upcoming season.
- We establish how many teams Balboa can support across each league format and level.
~6 weeks before USTA email
Returning captains are invited to renew
- Captains from the previous year's equivalent season are contacted first and given the opportunity to bring their team back.
- This is also the time for captains to indicate if they'd like to pass captaincy to another member — teams are welcome to return under new leadership.
- Captains have 2 weeks to respond. Teams that don't respond by the deadline will not have their spot held.
If more teams want to return than we have spots available, we will let captains know in advance and make selections by random draw from those who respond.
~2 weeks before USTA email
Returning team spots are confirmed & remaining openings announced
- Returning captains are notified of their status and given the go-ahead to register with USTA as soon as the registration email arrives.
- Any spots not filled by returning teams are published here on the Balboa website, listed by format and level (for example: "1 opening — 4.0 weekend men's doubles").
- Members are notified of available openings via the newsletter.
When the USTA registration email arrives
New team requests open for 2 weeks
- Once USTA opens registration, members can submit requests for new teams to fill any remaining Balboa spots.
- This window stays open for 2 weeks. We encourage anyone interested to submit early — requests received after the window closes will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis.
2 weeks after USTA email
New team selections are made
- After the request window closes, Balboa selects teams for any remaining open spots.
- If more than one request comes in for the same format and level, the spot is awarded by random draw.
- All applicants are notified of the outcome. Selected captains receive the go-ahead to complete their USTA registration.
If your team isn't approved
Waitlisted teams may have options at other facilities
- Teams that are not approved for a Balboa spot will be connected with the USTA league coordinator, who can explore placement at another facility.
- Relocation is not guaranteed and depends on availability at other sites, but we want to make sure every team has the opportunity to play.
Stay Connected
- We’ll send reminders via the club newsletter ahead of each deadline.
